Typhoon Hagibis destroyed this lovely red railway bridge in Ueda in October 2019. With strong backing from the local municipality, including bringing the bridge into public ownership, rebuilding work commenced in August 2020. Chikuma River Bridge finally reopened for train services in March 2021 and, to the relief of the local residents, the rail replacement bus was no more.
